In order to avoid tensions in the Taiwan Strait due to Beijing's recent military exercises around Taiwan, Australia intends to support and protect the people of Taiwan. Political commentator Jennifer Shu writes about this in a column for The Guardian.

"Australia is a country with deep ties with the peoples and countries of the Asia-Pacific region. Australia's duty is to see, hear and protect the people of Taiwan," the publication reports.

As Chinese Ambassador to Australia Xiao Qian noted in his speech at the National Press Club in Canberra on August 10, China-Australia relations are at a "critical stage." According to him, the countries have hope for a compromise on trade issues. However, Australia and China have absolutely no compromise on Taiwan.

The Chinese Embassy in Canberra described its country as the injured party in the American "political provocation" and, in their opinion, instead of condemning the perpetrator, Australia mistakenly attacked the victim.

The aggravation of relations between China and Taiwan occurred against the background of the visit to the island of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, which took place on August 2. Beijing considered the trip of the American politician a violation of the one-China principle and an attempt on the country's state sovereignty.
